I am not aware of much that has been written directly on the history of the photo-essay.  However Martha Rosler’s In, around and afterthoughts in Richard Bolton’s Contest of Meaning Cambridge Mass: MIT Press 1989

and Martha Rosler 3 works, Halifax NS: NSCAD Press ISBN 0-919616-46-1, which includes her photo-essay The Bowery in Two Inadequate Descriptive Systems; would be worth looking at otherwise you need to trawn articles on the history of documentary photography I think
